Animals Over Humans
Two paintings that flip the power balance between people and the animals they ignore.
this work
I researched the power balances between humans and animals, focusing on how animals exist in human-dominated spaces. Both of my works function as a critique, using unconventional and unrealistic compositions to challenge the status quo. The integration of graffiti represents a mix of street art with high art. In the piece featuring the pigeon-person, he is throwing money to people on the ground, who are jumping in the air and doing everything they can just to catch it. This work reverses the traditional roles of humans and pigeons; usually, pigeons are the ones fighting for bread crumbs, but here, humans are desperately scrambling for money given by a pigeon. For both pieces, I combined watercolor and acrylic markers, using the markers specifically to make the graffiti pop with a strong, vibrant look. Ultimately, these works were created to critique societal dynamics.
